Journey's End

Friday 26th Sep 2014
7:30 pm

To mark the centenary of World War 1 FMP Theatre proudly presents “Journey's End“ the ‘TONY’ award winning play by R C Sherriff.

Set over the course of four days leading up to a massive German attack on the British trenches in 1917, Journey's End charts the tension and claustrophobia as the new recruit to the company, Lieutenant Raleigh, discovers that Captain Stanhope, his former childhood friend and hero, has changed almost beyond recognition.

RC Sherriff's ground-breaking play remains one of the most powerful and successful pieces of modern drama and one of the most acclaimed examples of literature that deals with the tragedy and horror of conflict.
Journey's End is a 1928 drama, the seventh of English playwright R. C. Sherriff. It was first performed at the Apollo Theatre in London by the Incorporated Stage Society on 9th December 1928, starring a young Laurence Olivier, and soon moved to other West End theatres for a two-year run. It was included in Burns Mantle's The Best Plays of 1928–1929. The piece quickly became internationally popular, with numerous productions and tours in English and other languages. A 1930 film version was followed by other adaptations, and the play influenced other playwrights, including Noël Coward.

"The greatest of all war plays"
Hannen Swaffer, The Daily Express

"The play draws its power from the detail...incomparably moving"
Georgina Brown, Daily Mail

“We are paying tribute to the millions who fought in one of the biggest conflicts the world has ever seen, sharing with audiences a glimpse of the horror and tragedy of life in the trenches, and the bond of brotherhood that can only be forged in the furnace of war.”
Richard Batt, Artistic Director, FMP Theatre

Collaborators

Saturday 27th Sep 2014
7:30 pm

Directed by Paul Nelson with permission from Samuel French.

Arena Theatre return to the Mowlem with this razor sharp play from the pen of John Hodge (Shallow Grave, Trainspotting). Moscow 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents, stalked by secret police, has both. And then he's offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write about Stalin to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship with the omnipotent subject of his drama.
